A modified Unitree G1 humanoid robot named Pemba successfully reached the 6263-meter summit of Ecuador Mount Chimborazo on June 5 2026 marking a significant milestone in extreme-environment robotics. The project is a collaboration between Eastworlds Labs and Geologic Dome. Pemba walked autonomously on gentler sections of the 16-hour climb under about 30 degrees and was carried over steeper stretches. The robot weighs about 35 kg and was repeatedly disassembled between camps. The team outfitted it with cold-weather jackets composite foot covers and an autonomy stack trained in NVIDIA Isaac Sim achieving 85 percent sim-to-real transfer. The team plans a fall 2026 Everest expedition with the production crew behind the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks. Organizers plan to donate the robot to local Sherpa partners for remote environmental monitoring in extreme alpine environments.
