Boston Dynamics has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Google DeepMind to integrate Gemini Robotics foundational models into its Atlas humanoid robot. The collaboration marks a significant step forward in bringing advanced AI capabilities to industrial robotics, with initial trials already underway at Hyundai motor factories.
Atlas will begin with simple part-sorting tasks and progressively learn more complex operations. The robot stands at 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 200 pounds, features 56 degrees of freedom, can carry up to 50kg, and operates in temperatures ranging from -20° to 40°C. CEO Robert Playter emphasizes that the goal is achieving 99.9% reliability and learning new tasks within 1-2 days.
The Gemini integration enables Atlas to understand natural language commands, decompose complex tasks into executable steps, and dynamically adjust its path when obstacles arise. Beyond Atlas, Spot robot dogs are also participating in factory inspection rounds. Hyundai has committed to producing 30,000 robots annually, signaling strong industrial backing for this AI-robotics convergence.
