While this month's WAIC exhibition halls in Shanghai debated how humanoid robots can move from demo stands to real scenarios, Zoomlion — one of China's largest construction machinery manufacturers — was already running dozens of self-developed and self-produced humanoid robots on live factory lines at its Smart Industry City in Changsha, some 1,000 kilometers away.
From "Able to Perform" to "Able to Work"
According to a Securities Market Weekly report republished by the company, Zoomlion's humanoids are performing pre-assembly, sorting, code-scanning and material feeding, assembly, and quality inspection tasks, accumulating real-world data and operational experience on actual production lines. The company has completed nearly 20 scenario validations across machining, logistics, assembly and inspection.
The approach reflects a deliberate path for an equipment manufacturer: rather than stage demonstrations first, Zoomlion put its robots into "internships" on real production lines to test and iterate system integration capabilities in complex industrial environments.
Full-Stack Embodied AI Built on Industrial DNA
Zoomlion integrated its special robot and AI R&D teams in 2022 to develop full-stack embodied intelligence core technologies, growing the team to several hundred people. By 2026, the company had developed eight humanoid robot models, including full-size wheeled and bipedal variants, built an embodied AI training facility with 120 workstations, and established an embodied intelligence operations center.
The Smart Industry City provides what most robotics startups lack: more than 300 intelligent manufacturing production lines and over 2,000 industrial robots, described as the most complete industrial scenario map in the equipment manufacturing industry — a real "combat" environment for system-level coupling of embodied intelligence.
Scenario + Data Flywheel
Zoomlion's industrial internet platform, Zoomlion Cloud, has accumulated nearly a thousand models and more than 10,000 industrial intelligent algorithms, connecting over 1.8 million high-value equipment units globally. "Whether it's robots or construction machinery, the core logic can be summarized as 'perception, planning, and control,'" said Gong Yongbin, an algorithm engineer at Zoomlion Cloud — framing the robot business as a natural extension of existing technical capabilities rather than a cross-border leap.
The strategy mirrors an industry-wide recognition that high-quality data generated in real industrial scenarios is the scarcest resource in humanoid development. By validating on its own lines first, Zoomlion builds proprietary datasets while proving out the economic case workstation by workstation — the same incremental deployment logic now visible across leading manufacturers globally.
