Pilot Production Officially Underway
XPeng has officially begun small-batch pilot production of its IRON humanoid robot at the company's Guangzhou manufacturing facility, with the mass production line entering its final commissioning phase. The announcement marks a significant milestone in China's humanoid robot industry, as one of the country's largest automotive companies moves from R&D to manufacturing.
According to sources familiar with the matter, XPeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng — who also personally serves as CEO of the robotics business unit — has set an aggressive timeline: achieve mass production in 2026 and reach 1,000 units per month by year-end.
From Car-Making to Robot-Making: The XPeng Advantage
What sets XPeng apart from pure-play robotics startups is its systematic reuse of automotive-grade capabilities. The company's robotics business integrates hardware, AI large models, supply chain, and marketing modules from across the group, bringing decades of automotive manufacturing expertise to humanoid production:

First unveiled at XPeng's AI Tech Day in November 2024, the IRON humanoid robot was significantly upgraded in November 2025 with the second-generation model. Key specifications include:
- 62–82 active degrees of freedom across the full body
- 22 degrees of freedom in the hands for dexterous manipulation
- Turing AI chip for on-board intelligence
- Second-generation VLA (Vision-Language-Action) large model
- All-solid-state battery (industry-first application in humanoids)
The robot has already been deployed in industrial training roles at the Guangzhou factory, performing material handling and inspection tasks.
Commercialization Roadmap
XPeng has laid out a clear phased commercialization plan:
- Q1 2027 — Deploy in XPeng retail stores nationwide as shopping guides and greeters
- Q2 2027 — Expand to overseas markets through XPeng's global channel network
- 2028 — Broader deployment in household scenarios
This retail-first approach mirrors the strategy of other Chinese humanoid makers, but XPeng's direct ownership of a nationwide retail network gives it a uniquely captive deployment channel. The stores serve both as product showrooms and as real-world data collection environments for continuous VLA model improvement.
Industry Significance
XPeng's entry into humanoid robot production signals a broader industry shift: automotive companies are becoming serious players in the physical AI space. With their manufacturing scale, supply chain maturity, and balance sheet strength, car companies may prove to be the humanoid industry's most formidable competitors — even more so than pure-play robotics startups.
As He Xiaopeng framed it in his June internal letter, XPeng is transitioning from a "smart car company" to a "physical AI company." If IRON hits its 2026 production targets, it will be one of the first concrete validations of that strategic pivot.
