The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai has made one thing clear: embodied intelligence is moving out of the demonstration phase and into the hard, messy business of industrial deployment. With over 1,100 companies attending and more than 3,000 technological achievements on display, the most striking change at this year's event is the industry's new emphasis on practical use, repeatable operations, and measurable industrial value.
Gone, for the most part, are the attention-seeking robot performances that once dominated these fairs. Exhibitors are leaning into logistics sorting, factory handling, inspection work, and other tightly defined tasks. The shift reflects a growing consensus that the real barriers are about making machines work reliably, at scale, and with enough economic logic to justify deployment.
Pudu Robotics used WAIC to present its 'One Brain, Multiple Embodiments' approach, launching the PUDU D7 industrial semi-humanoid robot with a 14 kg payload capacity and 2-meter working height. AGIBOT called 2026 the first year of large-scale commercial deployment for physical AI systems. Xingdong Jiyuan (Stardust AI) said its embodied logistics solution has entered routine use at more than ten logistics centers operated by SF Express and China Post.
iFLYTEK demonstrated its embodied sorting robot, which has cleared China's CR certification, the EU's CE-MD conformity assessment, and a logistics evaluation by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. ZhiShen Technology made its first WAIC appearance with cumulative production surpassing 15,000 units by June 2026, with monthly output exceeding 5,000 units.
On the research side, WAIC roundtables centered on architecture and standards. Speakers argued that world models and a 'big brain, small brain' split have become the emerging common framework, but the field still lacks unified standards for data collection formats and annotation methods. The emerging consensus suggests that the most valuable companies in embodied intelligence will be those that can collect data, refine models, and deliver reliable machines into factories and warehouses at scale.
