Unitree Robotics founder and CEO Wang Xingxing has appeared on the cover of TIME magazine alongside the company's GD01 manned mecha robot, marking a watershed moment for China's embodied intelligence industry and the global robotics sector at large.
Titled "The Big Robot Moment", the cover features the nearly 2.7-meter-tall, half-ton GD01 dominating the frame, with Wang standing at its foot — a visual metaphor for the scale of the technology relative to its human creator. The cover story represents Wang's first international media interview and TIME's most prominent endorsement yet of a Chinese robotics entrepreneur.
From MMA Inspiration to Avatar-Esque Mecha
Wang revealed to TIME that the GD01's origins trace back to a UFC fight he attended, which sparked the idea of building a larger robot for boxing competitions. "Then I thought, Why not do an even bigger one that can actually carry a human inside?" he said. Beyond mixed martial arts, the design draws inspiration from James Cameron's Avatar: "We actually drew some references from a similar robot featured in Avatar."
Billed as the world's first mass-produced transformable mecha robot, the GD01 stands 9 feet (2.74m) tall, weighs approximately half a ton, and houses a pilot in a torso-mounted cockpit. It can walk on either two legs or four, with titanium-alloy limbs connected by heavy-duty mechanical hinges to a carbon fiber protective casing. Its punching force is powerful enough to knock down walls.
An Unlikely Prophet of the AI Age
TIME describes Wang as "an unlikely prophet of the AI age" — slight, bespectacled, and possessing none of the performative bravado associated with many technology founders, instead speaking about robotics with quiet, unwavering conviction.
Born in Ningbo, China, Wang founded Unitree in 2016 at age 26 with 2 million RMB (~$300,000) in angel funding, after stints at DJI and building his first bipedal robot as a university freshman on a budget of less than $30. The company has since become a cultural phenomenon: an estimated 600 million viewers watched Unitree's H2 and G1 humanoid robots perform at the 2026 Spring Festival Gala.
The Real Revolution: G1 and Cost Leadership
While the GD01 captures headlines, Wang's more pragmatic flagship product — the humanoid robot G1 — is positioned to become the workhorse of the global robotics transformation. Unitree has slashed the G1's pretax price from $16,000 to $13,500 in just 18 months by controlling core components, particularly actuators, which account for 50-70% of a humanoid's cost.
Unitree is the world leader in humanoid shipment volume, dispatching more than 5,500 units in 2025 — over a quarter of the global market. In June 2026, Nvidia announced that its cutting-edge Jetson Thor chip would be fitted into Unitree's H2 humanoid for research institutions worldwide.
"To the best of our knowledge, we don't see any significant humanoid robot competitors outside of China," Wang told TIME.
The Generalization Challenge
Wang acknowledged that generalization capability remains "the biggest headache for the entire global scientific community." He estimates that the "ChatGPT moment" for humanoid robots is still 2-10 years away — the point at which robots can accurately execute 80% of voice commands in 80% of unfamiliar environments.
"Once technology crosses that inflection point, robots can gradually enter large-scale commercial application," Wang said. He predicts that within 10 years, every household may own a small robot capable of doing laundry, cooking steaks, or providing basic care when people are ill.
Market Context: A $5 Trillion Industry by 2050
Morgan Stanley predicts that as many as 13 million humanoid robots could be in service by 2035 — equivalent to the population of Bolivia — growing to 1 billion units by 2050 when the industry could be worth $5 trillion.
The global race is intensifying: Tesla unveiled its third-generation Optimus humanoid in January 2026 with plans for 10 million units annually; Figure AI deployed its 03 humanoid at BMW's Spartanburg plant in June; and Agility Robotics has landed deployments with Toyota and Mercado Libre.
From Viral Sensation to Industry Signal
The TIME cover is more than a media milestone — it signals that embodied AI has transcended niche industry discourse and entered the global mainstream consciousness. For China's hard tech sector, it represents international validation that Chinese firms are climbing the technology value chain, not just competing on cost.
Wang also addressed the pressure of viral fame: "Because the hype is so frenzied, it brings considerable pressure to the company and the entire industry. Everyone expects your technology to leap forward at breakneck speed. But the truth is, breakthroughs in hard tech take time."
"Humanoid robot technology is still in its relatively early stages," he cautioned. "It may take a while before we see truly large-scale deployment. It won't happen overnight."
