One of Europe's most concrete humanoid factory trials is running the night shift in northern France. Since February, a Calvin robot built by Paris-based Wandercraft has been handling tyres at Renault's Douai assembly plant — the line that builds the Renault R5, Scenic and Megane, the Alpine A290, the Nissan Micra and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.
From Exoskeletons to the Tyre Line
Wandercraft, founded in 2012, built its reputation on the self-balancing Atalante exoskeleton before unveiling Calvin on June 8, 2026. Renault's use case is deliberately unglamorous: lifting tyre pairs weighing 12 to 15 kg each and feeding them to the line, work that punishes shoulders and backs across long shifts. The target cadence is four cycles per minute sustained over an eight-hour night shift — roughly 4,000 tyres moved per night without fatigue, grip drift or complaint.
$75 Million and a 350-Unit Roadmap
The trial builds on Renault's $75 million investment in Wandercraft in June 2025, one of the largest strategic bets by a European carmaker on a domestic robotics developer. The deployment roadmap is equally concrete: around ten Calvin units on the floor by the end of 2026, scaling to roughly 350 across Renault plants in France and Spain by the end of 2027. If those numbers hold, the program will rank among the largest humanoid deployments in the global automotive industry — and the first at this scale in Europe.
Hardware iteration is already following the factory feedback loop. A revised Calvin version is in the works with narrower hips, redesigned feet and a higher payload rating — changes driven directly by what the night shift exposed in the current machines.
For Europe's robotics sector, the signal matters as much as the unit count. Rather than a demo video or a pilot with vague KPIs, Renault and Wandercraft have committed to a production cadence, unit targets and a multi-plant rollout — the kind of procurement-backed deployment that turns factory robots from conference exhibits into line items.
