Gritt, a San Francisco-based deep tech startup, has exited stealth with just over $32 million in combined pre-seed and Series A funding to deploy AI-powered robotic systems on large-scale construction sites, starting with solar farms. Rather than building entirely new construction robots from scratch, Gritt takes a pragmatic approach: its AI-powered systems bolt onto existing construction equipment such as standard skid steers and forklifts. Robotic arms mounted on these vehicles pick, transport, and position solar panels with millimeter precision — turning already-paid-for equipment into autonomous installation machines.

The throughput gains are substantial. A typical eight-person crew installs around 800 panels per day. Working alongside Gritt's system, the same crew can place 3,000 to 4,000 panels daily. The company says its machines have placed tens of thousands of panels with zero breakages, though this claim has not been independently verified.

3 Gigawatts of Contracted Pipeline

Gritt says it is contracted to help install nearly 3 gigawatts of solar capacity over the next 18 months, with customers that include three of the top 10 US power construction companies. Currently, only two systems are deployed in the field, but the company plans to scale to 48 systems within six months.

The gap between two working machines and a contracted pipeline worth gigawatts of solar is the kind of distance that separates a promising demo from a functioning business. Gritt's ability to execute on this scaling will determine whether it becomes a major player in the rapidly growing solar construction market.

Beyond Solar: Broader Construction Automation

While solar farm construction is Gritt's initial market entry point, the company has broader ambitions. Beyond panel installation, it is targeting rebar tying, rack building, and other labor-heavy construction tasks where AI-powered robots could meaningfully improve productivity.

The timing is favorable. The clean energy sector is struggling to find enough workers for a rapidly expanding pipeline of solar and infrastructure projects. If Gritt can deliver on its promise of dramatically faster installation with zero breakage rates, it could capture a significant share of a market that is only expected to grow as renewable energy deployment accelerates worldwide.
