With WAIC 2026 barely wrapped, Shanghai has fired the next shot in its embodied AI calendar: the 2026 Global Developer Pioneer Summit (GDPS) and International Embodied AI Skills Competition has opened its global call for teams, with the grand final set for October 23-25 at Zhangjiang Science Hall, according to a Wenhui Daily report carried by Shanghai Observer.
National Policy Backdrop
The competition rides on a national mandate: China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission have launched the 2026 Humanoid Robot and Embodied AI Real-World Training Special Action, defining nine priority scenarios — manufacturing, inspection and analysis, maintenance, warehousing and logistics, delivery and retail, healthcare and elderly care, work safety, emergency rescue, and disaster mitigation. The contest itself is structured around five scenario families — industrial manufacturing, commercial services, urban governance, care, and special/creative — covering 18 competition tasks in an L1 online qualifier → L2 offline training camp → L3 real-scene final ladder.
Compete as Roadshow, Win as Fundraise
The mechanism is deliberately capital-coupled. Teams (max five members, at least one with model-tuning or robot-operation experience) compete for a million-yuan prize pool, professional FA fundraising coaching, and compute/model/corpus vouchers. Champions receive city- and district-level capital recommendations with ten-million-yuan-level intent-funding matchmaking and free incubation at the Moli Community and AI Town hubs; winning projects also fast-track to the 2026 Dubai AI conference and the 2027 Shanghai auto show's embodied AI expo. An upgraded "open competition mechanism" (揭榜挂帅) has scenario owners posting real industrial problems that teams bid to solve — effectively a technical tender closing the loop from problem statement to adoption.
Yao Qizhi Chairs a Three-Way Jury
The expert steering committee is chaired by Yao Qizhi, Turing Award laureate and Chinese Academy of Sciences academician, under a three-part judging system combining AI scientists, embodied AI specialists, and human master craftsmen — extending the dual-track judging pilot from the inaugural December 2025 edition, which drew a hundred-plus teams, nearly 50,000 attendees and 1.88 billion online impressions. Finals will run black-box blind testing and extreme stress tests on real physical scenes, with training on the Saixing embodied platform at 1:1 scene fidelity.
An International Lane Through the Eastern Hub
A dedicated international division at the Shanghai Eastern Hub International Business Cooperation Zone lets overseas teams enter visa-light: foreign participants can stay up to 30 days on valid travel documents with invitation filing, with port visas, bonded equipment handling and compute access arranged in-zone. Invitations name MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, ETH Zurich, NUS, HKU and others. The message is consistent with Shanghai's post-WAIC positioning: competitions here are no longer demo days — they are procurement pipelines where deployment data, clearance times and failure-rate curves double as due-diligence reports for investors.
