AMD Enters the Humanoid Robot Compute Race

Foundation Future Industries, a San Francisco-based robotics startup backed by Eric Trump, announced on July 23 a strategic partnership with AMD to co-develop autonomous humanoid robots for military and industrial deployment.

Under the deal, Foundation will use AMD's Ryzen AI Embedded X100 Series processors — introduced in January 2026 — to build the second-generation Phantom MK-2, a dual-use humanoid designed for both factory floors and combat zones.

From Battlefield to Assembly Line

Founded in 2024, Foundation is not a conventional robotics outfit. Its Phantom machines have been tested in Ukraine, and the company has since won Pentagon contracts to develop humanoid robots for the U.S. military. The startup describes itself as the only company building dual-use humanoids for both heavy industry and defense.

The first-generation Phantom MK-1, standing 180cm with 29 degrees of freedom, has already been deployed in automotive manufacturing, running 24/5 schedules inside customer facilities. According to the company, MK-1 robots helped build more than 24,000 cars in 2025.

AMD's FPGA Advantage for Dexterous Control

The partnership leverages AMD's acquisition of Xilinx — particularly its programmable FPGA technology. Foundation's Andrea Esposito explained that the FPGA chips enable coordination of 23 degrees of freedom in the robot's hands while integrating high-frequency tactile feedback "in a single deterministic control loop."

The broader deal pulls in AMD's CPUs, graphics, and adaptive computing to run perception, reasoning, and motor control on the same platform. AMD claims its chip delivers 2.5x faster inference and 3x faster training compared to NVIDIA's offerings, though benchmarks have not been independently verified.

Phantom MK-2: Built for Extreme Environments

The upcoming Phantom MK-2 has been engineered around AMD silicon from the start, with specifications designed for both warehouse and warzone deployment:
