Aitu Technology, a subsidiary of China's Jack Technology based in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, unveiled its humanoid sewing robot and the Ai10 AI sewing machine at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai from July 17–20.
Unlike general-purpose humanoid robots, Aitu's system is purpose-built for garment manufacturing. The robot handles fabric loading, pocket placement, and other production tasks across shirts, T-shirts, and other apparel, addressing acute labor shortages and rising production costs in the global garment industry.
How it works. During WAIC demonstrations, the humanoid sewing robot autonomously navigated between workstations, fabric racks, and operating tables using a high-precision mobile platform. It completed material handling, positioning, template alignment, and sewing operations entirely without manual intervention — adapting naturally to flexible, small-batch manufacturing environments common in apparel production.
Paired with the Ai10 AI sewing machine, the system forms an integrated production workflow spanning fabric intake through finished garments. According to the company, this end-to-end automation represents a meaningful step toward fully autonomous garment manufacturing.
Specialized VLA foundation model. Powering the system is Aitu's proprietary vision-language-action (VLA) foundation model, trained specifically on sewing applications. The model enables the robot to recognize and handle fabrics of different materials, thicknesses, and conditions, while reducing the need for reprogramming when production requirements change — a critical advantage in fast-fashion and custom-order environments.
Already deployed internationally. Aitu's robotic sewing solution has already been rolled out at garment factories in Thailand, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, and several Chinese provinces including Henan and Jiangsu. The company plans to further expand the application of intelligent automation technologies across the global apparel industry.
Why it matters. While most humanoid robot development targets general-purpose platforms, Aitu's vertically focused approach underscores a parallel trend: specialized humanoids built for specific verticals may reach commercial viability faster than generalist platforms. The garment sector — historically one of the most labor-intensive and geographically fragmented manufacturing industries — offers a compelling use case where automation can deliver immediate and measurable ROI.
